1620 Hinkson Avenue – Sally Flood House

Named to the Notable Properties List in 2004, this Queen Anne style home was built in 1895. It was owned and named for Miss Sally Flood, one of Columbia’s first primary school teachers. In fact, Columbia Board of Education nearly named Field Elementary School for her, deciding instead to name the school after the Eugene Field because he was nationally known.

Her father Noah Flood was a noted Baptist minister and built the house at 307 N. Ann for his wife and five daughters.

Sallie Flood taught first grade at Benton Elementary School for 19 years until her death in 1915, according to a July 6, 1915 Columbia Tribune article.

The house at 1620 Hinkson Avenue is one of only a few such Queen Anne Victorian homes in Columbia.
