The Columbia Cemetery was named in 2001 to the Notable Properties List of Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission.
On Feb. 1, 2007, it was named to the National Register of Historic Places.
This cemetery on Broadway is the final resting place of veterans of every American military conflict since the Revolutionary War. It includes the graves of many of Columbia’s leaders.
Why is Columbia Cemetery considered a historic property? Because such places and the grave markers provide us with historical information and reminders of past architectural and burial practices. For example, there is a section for the “Colored Infantry” of the Civil War.
