Churches, chapels and cemeteries — sacred places — have been placed on both Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission’s Notable Properties List and the National Register of Historic Places.

  • 30 E. Broadway, Columbia Cemetery, 1820. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2001 and the National Register on Feb. 1, 2007. Here is a link to the Columbia Cemetery website. It includes significant amounts of historical information.
  • 1217 W. Business Loop 70, Calvary Cemetery. 1929. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2012, it began as an African American cemetery prior to desegregation in the 1950s/1960s and has since been absorbed into Memorial Park Cemetery. “It is the final resting place of notable Columbia businesswoman Annie Fisher, as well as numerous other members of the local African American community.  Other black families represented include the Mitchell, Smith and Rickets families,” according to a Sept. 17, 2017 Columbia Historic Preservation Commission report by Deb Sheals.
  • 101 N. Tenth St., First Christian Church. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2001 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Oct. 29, 1991.
  • 123 S. Ninth St.,  Calvary Episcopal Church. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2003.
  • 204 S. Ninth St., Missouri United Methodist Church. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 4, 1980.
  • 401 N. Fifth St., Second Christian Church. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 4, 1980.
  • 407 E. Broadway, Second Missionary Baptist Church, 1894. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2000 and the National Register on Sept. 4, 1980. Visit the church’s website here: Second Missionary Baptist Church
  • 501 Park St., St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 4, 1980.
  • 702 Wilkes Blvd., United Methodist Church. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2009.
  • 1115 Locust St., Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2008.
  • 1306 E. Walnut St., Firestone-Baar Chapel, dedicated in 1957. Named to the Notable Properties List in 2002.
  • 1320 Fairview United Methodist Church, as of 2014, houses Countryside Nursery School.
