Reminder: June 18 meeting to form preservation group

Open to the public, a second meeting of a proposed group to preserve Columbia’s history will be held at 2 p.m. on June 18, 2022 in the Friends Room of the Columbia Public Library.

The first meeting held on May 7, 2022, drew 19 people and created a list of possible goals. This list included:

— Helping property owners preserve/restore property with loans, workshops and information;

— Activism to save buildings from demolition;

–Creation of a central repository of Columbia’s history.

The group agreed that whatever a new organization does, its mission should be unique and designed to work with the already established organizations, the Boone County History & Culture Center and the city’s Historic Preservation Commission.

At Saturday’s meeting, there will be a short presentation on both the Boone County History & Culture Center and the city’s HPC. The goal of the meeting will be to decide on a working name and begin developing the group’s goals and niche.
