History geeks rejoice! Here is a link to a 1988 transcription by Charles O’Dell of a 1901-1909 director of Black households in Boone County. This resource is made available by the Daniel Boone Regional Library as part of its new Missouri Bicentennial Collection.
The DBRL’s description:
“A unique record of African American history in Boone County, this compendium draws on several sources: the newspaper The Columbia Professional World, an obscure study and masters thesis by a man named William Wilson Elwang (University of Missouri: 1904), and census materials. The whole creates a record of demographic, housing and statistical information regarding the Black community in the early 20th century. This population had little voice in the mainstream press and much of the public record is scant given the racial bias and segregation at the time. This directory also included townships beyond Columbia including Ashland, Bourbon, Cedar, Centralia, Hallsville, Hundsdale, Perche, Rocheport, Rocky Fork and Sturgeon.
