Save money, save historic buildings, Sept. 13 in Kansas City

Missouri Preservation is hosting its annual event, Unhappy Hour, 2019 Places in Peril, on 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the former Kemper Arena, now Hy-Vee Arena and you can save $10 off this $40 a ticket event.

At this event, you’ll learn about new places throughout Missouri that are being named on a building endangered list.

    • Here’s how you can save money. Simply go to Missouri Preservation’s Facebook page and share the announcement about the event. Yup, one click = $10 off the event. That $30 ticket gets you BBQ and two drinks.
    • This also is an opportunity to see the arena, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 for a unique characteristic. It was listed by meeting Criteria Consideration G, which means it achieved significance within the last 50 years.
    • Why is the former Kemper Arena important? Events held there include the 1976 Republican National Convention and concerts by Elvis, U2 and Queen.
    • Why attend this event at all? It’s an opportunity to learn more about historic preservation, the buildings now in danger and how you can help to save them.

So what buildings are in danger in Columbia or Boone County? What do think you can do to help save them?

Hint: One option would be to join Missouri Preservation, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of historic preservation. I’m a member and I’ve learned so much from their events. And bonus, the events are always a blast!
